About us

We are evangelical Christians, so we are committed to the good news of salvation in Christ alone, by grace alone, through faith alone, as revealed in Scripture alone, to the glory of God alone. Members share those convictions without dividing over less important issues. We belong to Ely Diocese in the Church of England, but we belong to Christ first, so we welcome Christians from many other backgrounds.

St Matthew's Church was planted from another local church about 150 years ago, in what was then a very deprived area. The founder chose the text "we preach Christ crucified" for his sermon on the first Sunday. The congregation grew quickly and planted two more churches, establishing schools and medical care. Archbishop Justin Welby was one of hundreds who joined during a renewal in the 1970s.

In 2008 about a hundred newcomers joined as a "church graft" from St Andrew the Great in central Cambridge. Since then we have reshaped our building and programme to help us share the news about Jesus, which is too good to keep to ourselves. You can download a leaflet to find out more about our building and history.

Meet the staff

We believe every member of church has a part to play in the life of the church, helping to build one another up and reach out to the wider world. Our employed staff aim to "equip" church members rather than replace them. (Ephesians 4 v12). Please feel free to contact any of us.
