Clarification of names used to describe the parish The parish of St. Matthew's was formed out of the parish of St. Andrew-the-Less. The Church of St. Andrew-the-Less was the parish Church of the village of Barnwell situated about 1 mile from the centre of Cambridge. Last century, the Church of St. Andrew-the-Less was declared unfit for usage. A new church, Christ Church was built to become the Parish Church of Barnwell and the Parish Church of the Ecclesiastical District of St. Andrew-the-Less. Shortly after Christ Church was built, the old Parish Church of St. Andrew-the-Less was restored and re-opened for worship. Although still technically the Church of St. Andrew-the-Less it became known as the Abbey Church. The old village of Barnwell was tiny but the geographical area covering the parish of St. Andrew-the-Less was massive and is sometimes known as the parish of Barnwell. St. Matthew's Parish was carved out of the Parish of St. Andrew-the-Less within the district of Barnwell. Barnwell is no longer a village but an area of urban Cambridge. Current Ordnance Survey Maps of Cambridge identify the Barnwell district. |
